121 Eagle Squadron, RAF Southend. Flight Lieutenant Jackson Barrett Mahon DFC (RAFVR)(USA), flying Spitfire Vb aircraft BM 405 AV-J on a fighter sweep over the beaches of Dieppe, France during Operation Jubilee was engaged in aerial combat with multiple German Focke-Wulf 190 aircraft when he was shot down, baling from his aircraft into the English Channel. Flight Lieutenant Mahon's Spitfire crashed near Pas-de-Calais.

Inflating his dingy, Mahon paddled to shore at Dieppe and was captured to become on of the first American Prisoners of War. He was liberated from Stalag Luft 3 by advancing American Forces
