242 "All Canadian" Squadron (Toujours Pret) Hurricane I aircraft P 2962 was shot down over London during the Battle of Britain. This was the Luftwaffe's first large attack on London, England.
Pilot Officer John Benzie (RAF)(Can) was missing, presumed killed in action. The family name was Benzies but he had enlisted in the RAF as Benzie. When his family inquired about the how, when, and where of his death, the RAF replied, "There is no record of a Canadian, Pilot Officer John Benzie, as serving in the RAF."
The burnt remains of a Hurricane and what is believed to be the remains of Pilot Officer John Benzie (RAF)(Can) were found and excavated at Blackacre in Theydon Bois, Essex, UK in 1976. There was strong circumstantial evidence that this was Benzie's aircraft but not enough for the Ministry of Defense to confirm the identity of the remains, which were buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery as an unknown airman. He is also commemorated on the Runnymeade Memorial and the family plot at Elwood Cemetery in Winnipeg, Manatoba, Canada
