1674 Heavy Conversion Unit (Coastal Command HCU) RAF Longtown. Halifax B MkII aircraft BB 278 crashed into the sea in Moricombe Bay, Solway Firth, near Grune Point, Kirkbride, Cumbria. The entire crew was lost in the explosion and fire that occurred after the crash
