90 Halifaxes from 408, 415, 420, 425, 426, 432, and 434 Squadrons were ordered on an attack of the oil refinery at Castrop-Rauxel. The crews were over the target at between 16,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 712,000 lbs of high explosives. According to reports, the weather was clear and severe damage was caused.
While some of the group went to Castrop-Rauxel, 55 Halifaxes from 424, 427 and 433 Squadrons were ordered on an attack of German troop positions near Le Havre. The crews were over the target at between 9,000 and 11,000feet, releasing 305,000 lbs of high explosives. According to reports, the weather was clear and the target was accurately bombed. Halifax aircraft was hit by flak during daylight operations over the target Castrop-Rauxel, Germany. Flying Officer Laderoute was killed in the aircraft and was the only casualty, the aircraft returned safely.
