405 Vancouver Squadron RCAF, Pathfinder Force, RAF Gransden Lodge. Lancaster III aircraft ND 587 LQ-D was lost returning as "Target Illuminator" from an operation against the rail yards at Haine-Saint-Pierre Belgium in the lead-up to the D-Day landings. After successfully bombing the rail yards, the aircraft was attacked and damaged by multiple German night fighters, crashing in a farm field near Gallaix, Belgium with the loss of the entire crew
The Nachjagtd Combat Archive by Theo Boiten credits the kill to Unteroffizier Konrad Beyer of 1/NJG4 but the 405 Squadron Association website also credits Leutnant Wolfgang Marstaller of 1/NJG4 as having attacked the Lancaster after Unteroffizier Beyer. Marstaller's Me110 aircraft was shot down a few minutes later by a Mosquito of 169 Squadron, RAFFlight Lieutenant Gordon Winston Knupp (RCAF), Pilot Officer Claude Michael Sylvah (RCAF), Flight Lieutenant William McLaurin Chase (RAAF), Flight Lieutenant William Sinclair (RAFVR), Flight Sergeant James Matthew Buckley (RAFVR), Flight Sergeant Ronald Denver Daniels (RAFVR) and Flight Sergeant John Thomas Gill (RAFVR) were all killed in action
