414 Squadron (Totis viribus) RCAF, RAF Croyden. Flying Officer Hollis Harry Hills (RCAF)(USA), flying Mustang Ia aircraft AG 470 RU-M was flying as wingman to Flight Lieutenant Frederick Edsall Clarke (RCAF) during a two-aircraft, low level, tactical reconnaissance flight over Dieppe, France as part of Operation Jubilee when he engaged several German Focke-Wulf 190 aircraft that were attacking Flight Lieutenant Clarke's Mustang. Hills shot down one FW 190, becoming the first confirmed Mustang pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft in World War Two. Flight Lieutenant Clarke was forced to ditch his damaged aircraft in the English Channel but survived, although injured, to be rescued and returned to England. Flying Officer Hills also returned safely in England. Hollis would later serve to fly in the US Navy in Korea, rising to the rank of Commander
